Berkshire Review

Othello, The Haymarket Theatre, Basingstoke

Played in modern costume, this Haymarket Theatre Company and Concentric Circles joint production expounded Shakespeare's classic tragedy against a sombre grey multi-purpose set. that helped focus our attention onto the play's text, bringing the tale of treacherous jealousy vividly to life.
Ricky Fearon portrayed the full range of emotions demanded by the title role. His presence, albeit as loving husband, betrayed cuckold or remorseful murderer, dominated the stage whenever he appeared. Although the evil underhanded characterisation was there, Christopher Middleton's interpretation of the villainous Iago did not quite achieve the same impact. Mandena Jones was excellent as Desdemona. Every movement and expression clearly conveyed her unfaltering naivety as the devoted wife, unable to comprehend her husband's sudden change of attitude. Tracy Sweetinburgh brought a sense of directness to her role as Iago's wife Emilia, finally seeing through her husband's wickedness
