Mandana Jones

From: Theatre Record

At Basingstoke’s Haymarket Christopher Fettes directs and balances well the unbound love, lost control and violence caused by intrigue, hate and inferiority complex, which fuel Shakespeare’s Othello. Agnes Treplin’s set consists of bleak grey-brownish buildings of an American (hence the male uniforms) camp opening cleverly into a stylish bar and even allowing a glance into a shower/toilet room. However, the production has one minor and one major weakness: the two Venetian carnival masks and the female doge are definite misplacements; with the exception of Mandana Jones, who is a most touching and approachable Desdemona, all other actors in this cast urgently need voice training - even Ricky Fearon (though his Othello is well acted) and Christopher Middleton (who gives a fine performance as an evil churning Iago).
